Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng born 21/11/1985. Chieng is currently a Senior correspondent on The Daily
Show, Comedy Central. Chieng is the creator and star on the sitcom Ronny Chieng
International Student. It premiered on ABC Australia as well as Comedy Central
Asia in 2017. Chieng was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to a Malaysian Chinese
family. Chieng was brought up in Singapore and in the United States. He lived
in Manchester, New Hampshire, between 1989 and 1994. Chieng was a performer with
Trevor Noah in 2013 at the comedy festival in Melbourne, Australia. Chieng was
invited to audition for the Daily Show's correspondent position two years
later. Chieng was named one of the top 10 comics to watch by Variety in July of
2016. In October 2016, Chieng appeared as a guest on The Daily Show to offer a
response to a Jesse Watts Fox News segment that many believed was racist.
Chieng airs an expletive-filled critique of the segment on Fox News that was
deemed conservative by many. He also visited New York City's Chinatown in which
Watters made fun of the residents. The viral video received coverage in the
Washington Post and Slate In his early years, Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout.
While he's been in Australia for more than a decade Chieng doesn't have
citizenship or permanent residency status in Australia. In 2018, Chieng
admitted that he was negative on the Daily Show, but later clarified in an
interview that he was "100 percent not afraid of dogs".
